Tackling racism

What's the world for if you can't make it up the way you want it - Toni Morrison
This is a pivotal moment to create lasting change for a better world.

The murder of George Floyd, the subsequent global protests and the Covid-19 pandemic have brought systemic and structural racial inequalities and injustice into the spotlight. It is time for action to address the challenges faced by people of colour and to find solutions to end discrimination.

We want our tenants to feel safe in their homes and supported in their communities. We want you and our staff and partners to feel confident that we are committed to your wellbeing and prosperity.

United Welsh is proud to be a part of diverse communities across South Wales and tackling inequality has always been of the utmost importance to us. The events of recent months have made us realise however that we need to do more.

We are looking within and educating ourselves. We have asked ourselves as individuals, and as an organisation, what can we do to make things better? To be better?

We have talked about our unconscious biases and personal experiences, and we will continue to use and share resources from the black community to help us to learn and reflect.

We are also considering the way we work; so how we recruit; how we communicate; how we create safe environments to tackle racist behaviour; how we reach out to Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities and how we can use our resources and influence to provide a platform for people to flourish.

United Welsh has signed up to the “Deeds not Words” pledge from housing equalities charity Tai Pawb, which outlines our firm commitment to take action to:

  • Mitigate the impact of Covid-19 on Black, Asian and other minority ethnic staff and communities
  • Improve the ethnic diversity of board and staff at all levels
  • Communicate and engage
  • Develop an inclusive culture

If you want to share your experiences or have feedback or ideas about challenging racial inequality, including what we could do or do better, please tell us. We don’t have all the answers and we don’t want this to be a conversation that ends. We need your help.
